Board of Directors
Executive Board of Directors
Jill A. Nerby, B.S.
Founder and Director of
Aniridia Foundation International
Congenital Eye Disorder Project Manager
University of Virginia School of Medicine
Department of Ophthalmology
Charlottesville, Virginia
Jill Nerby is CEO of the Aniridia Foundation International (AFI) Board of
Directors. She founded this 501(c)3 non profit organization which was
started as USA Aniridia Network in 2001. In 2006, due to many requests
from physicians and families outside the USA, the non profit organization
name was changed to Aniridia Foundation International.
Jill was born with sporadic Aniridia and glaucoma. Her experiences with
this condition, as well as her passion to help others, educate the public,
and her desire to make a difference in the Aniridia population, especially
for the children of today and tomorrow caused her to create this research
and education focused organization.
Since 2000, Jill has been undergoing surgeries for glaucoma valve implants,
retinal surgery and stem cell and corneal transplants all while running
this large organization and being a single mom to her son Michael, who
also has aniridia and glaucoma due to familial inheritance.
Jill graduated college with a Bachelor of Science degree (Psychology and
Biology) and finished her pre-med studies while working in the field of
occupational therapy. She also worked in, the media and as a graphic
designer before her eyesight declined. Jill has been an invited guest
speaker at several research, medical and organization meetings both
nationally and internationally. She and AFI personnel also exhibit at many
medical meetings and conventions. Among her other activities, she has
co-authored a book "Aniridia and WAGR Syndrome" published by
Oxford University Press.
Jill's interest in helping people with low vision and blindness also
focuses on research to work towards a cure for them and led her to create
the International Aniridia Medical Registry and Gene Bank. This collection
of data, photos and DNA will provide actual patient data for researchers
to use towards eliminating this genetic condition. Since medical issues
commonly found in the general population such as difficult to treat
glaucoma, corneal scarring, low vision / blindness, cataracts, diabetes,
and autism seem to be characteristics of the syndrome of aniridia, all
research into these medical issues will help those affected in the general
population, as well as, those with aniridia.
Jill, who is originally from Wisconsin, comes from a family of leaders in
the Lions clubs and encourages everyone to support their local Lions
organization in helping the blind and visually impaired.
